30% of the 400,000 tons of apples produced in the region of Cuauhtemoc is of poor quality. As a result, that 30% is sold at dumping prices to the market forcing producers to sell the remaining 70%, which has a good quality, at low prices, said Sigifredo Corral, the president of the Association of Apple Producers from Cuauhtemoc.
He added that the industry was only paying 70 cents for a kilo of their apples so many producers had chosen to send their production to various parts of the country, where they can sell it for at least 2 pesos. Thus, the sector needs a macro industry that can process the apples locally and that might also pay 2 pesos for a kilo of apples; a proposal that has been discussed with UNIFRUT.
Apple producers have made this request to the candidates for governor and they will soon make it to the candidates for mayors and deputies. Producers are convinced that the apple of lesser value and quality should not penetrate other entities, as it would generate an oversupply that would affect them the most.
