Seasonality tables

Regional and seasonal fruit & veg is trendy

It is the time of the season, seasonality table for fruit & vegetables
The current culinary trend is sustainability. And all the start-up companies show that there is an increasing demand for well-prepared, sustainable produced food of high quality. This trend is part of the good life, because a lot of people want to eat tasty and proper organic food. But you don’t need to go to a new and upcoming restaurant to take part in this trend. Since the easiest way to eat sustainably is to eat what is in season. And with a seasonality table you can see in one glance the fruit and vegetables that are harvested at the moment and can be eaten fresh from the fields. And that knowledge is worthwhile for several reasons.

The benefits of a seasonality table
Buying products that grow in the region saves on transport emissions and decreases environmental pollution. It is also good for the consumers’ wallet. Regional products bought at the right time can be a bargain because the supply is larger and the transport costs are lower. Even the larger supermarket chains, such as Edeka, offer their customers a wide range of regional and seasonal products. A seasonality table is an aid to shop for the right produce in a targeted manner.

The taste buds prefer to shop in season, fruit and vegetables grown in the open field are fresher and tastier than products grown in greenhouses. Furthermore, food science studies show that our palate appreciates variety. Eating different kinds of foods is a way to develop and appreciate a broader taste. And a quick view of the table shows that there is no reason to fear that there won’t be any food available during certain months.

Basically, there are always certain seasonal fruit and vegetables available, and recipes can be adjusted depending on the season and the month. Every season has its main vegetable, for example, Brussels sprouts and kale during the winter, asparagus and fresh spinach in spring. The summer provides tasty tomatoes, chard and beans. Autumn is the right time for pumpkin dishes or mange tout. Fresh fruit is mainly available in the summer, but apples can be easily stored during the winter.

Regional fruit and vegetables become trendsetters
The seasonality table saves the grocery shopper considerable time. The products are easy to find and directly available or even on offer. And often it is a way to discover new and different products, because fruit and vegetables are subject to trends too. Or vegetables that temporarily have been less popular or even forgotten are rediscovered. Arugula and pumpkins are just two examples that made such a development. For decades they weren’t popular and now they are really trendy and on everybody’s lips.
