Fruit Connection, quality inspectors

"Around 30% of fruit and veg are lost in the post-harvest"

"Worldwide, around 30% of the fruit and vegetable production is lost due to issues in the post-harvest. Being aware of that, one of our goals is to help producers better understand those problems and collectively discuss strategies to minimise them. With the quality and research equipment at origin, we compare weather statistics, applications, agricultural practices and technologies, matching them with the quality at destination, types of problems, incidence periods, severity and frequency," pointed out Tiago Vasconcelos, director of the company.

Fruit Connection is based in the Netherlands, but also accepts requests from other countries in Europe. "We are specialised in supporting the quality department of producing and trading companies devoted to the export of fresh fruit," explains Vasconcelos.

Its services focus on quality analyses at destination, with objective inspections and sorting of each product according to European quality standards. To this end, they offer their own inspection system, which can be adjusted and customised according to business needs. Given the flexibility and experience of the team, they can also use inspections systems tailored to each client. They also conduct quality analyses aimed at comparing or verifying the results of the use of certain products and post-harvest technologies.

"We are a company with experience in everything to do with the production chain: we are aware of the challenges and needs of exporters and importers, from the start of the production process up to the last link in the market chain, where we offer technical support and provide value added with the improvement of their products," explains Maximiliano Derosas, general manager of Fruit Connection.

The company specialises and has experience in different types of fruit: grapes, papayas, pineapples, asparagus, garlic, ginger, onions, sweet potatoes, pitahaya, citrus fruits in general, kiwis, berries (blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.) and most varieties of commercial interest for export of melons, watermelons, mangoes, avocados, apples, pears and stonefruit. It works with companies from Brazil, Costa Rica, the US and Spain, among other countries.

Fruit Connection employs professionals with more than 12 years' experience in the sector, with the right agronomic training and specialised in the area of post-harvest. They also have the ability to communicate in English, Spanish, Dutch, Portuguese and Italian, which is certainly "a plus" when it comes to providing a better service to their customers, in the words of Derosas.

The unusual weather conditions this year, caused by El NiƱo, may have affected the fruit productions in various countries.

Quality inspectors discussed the increasingly strict European laws, which "may affect or entail difficulties for many companies that are still small or have limitations to adapt to new trends. As for companies with more resilience, they may continue exporting to major markets in the world (US, Europe, Canada, Japan, Far East, etc.)".
