US: CA lettuce supplies strong out of the Central Valley
There’s an ample supply of lettuce coming out of the Golden State’s Central Valley, near Fresno, according to a grower who supplies a large variety of leafy greens to U.S. markets as well as to Asian, European and Canadian markets.
“We are currently harvesting lettuce in Huron, California, we will be harvesting in Huron for a few more weeks and then we will be moving harvest to Salinas,” said Caitlin Antle Wilson, of Tanimura and Antle, a third generation family owned vegetable growing, packing and shipping company.
Rain dotted the region in March, but current dry conditions allowed for harvest to begin.
“The weather has been great lately, so lettuce is growing fast and is ready to be harvested a bit sooner than we anticipated but that’s also fairly normal for this time of year, the quality has been great, ” Wilson explained, adding that the current ample lettuce supply is out pacing lettuce needs.
“There is a lot of volume of product, so demand is lower than current industry supply levels for most varieties.”
Tanimura and Antle grow lettuce: red leaf, green leaf, romaine, romaine hearts and artisan lettuce.
“Our artisan lettuce is a very popular propriety lettuce, Wilson said, adding that she’s seeing consumers utilize the vegetable in various unique ways.
“Using lettuce as a carbohydrate alternative for wraps or sandwiches instead of bread.”
