Michel Binst, Primimport

More new potatoes from Cyprus this year

New potatoes have been available for some weeks at Primimport in Brussels. The company currently offers products from Israel and Cyprus, and according to Michel Binst the sales have been satisfactory so far. “Easter was early this year, therefore we also started a little earlier. Sales are going fairly well, we cannot complain.”

Cyprus has more
“Israel started the season a little later with less volume. Organic potatoes in particular were somewhat delayed. Prices were thus slightly higher than last year,” according to Binst. “Cyprus had more planted this year. Volumes are currently slowly starting to increase. Prices start at the same level each season, and that is also the case in 2016.”

No shortages
Binst also says it is too early to predict if the larger harvest will have much impact on demand. “Fact is that more quantity is coming, but it is possible that there will be more demand. Last year we received less from this country and we had a shortage. Sufficient quantities will probably arrive now. As a matter of fact, in 2015 there was a shortage from multiple countries. That is not the case now. Within two months we will be able to draw conclusions and tell you whether or not we have been able to sell everything.”
