Mexican state expects to harvest nearly 50,000 tons of guava

According to official data of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), via the Agricultural food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Zacatecas has recorded an outstanding 860-hectare advance of the guava harvest.

With a maximum yield of 4,555 tons per hectare, so far the entity has produced 3,918 tons of the 49,752 tons they expect to produce this cycle.

As such, Zacatecas is the third biggest producing state of guava after Michoacan, which has produced 8,175 tons so far, and Aguascalientes, which has produced 8,789 tons.

Compared to last year's first quarter, there was a decrease in production due to the low performance obtained; in the same period of 2015 the average yield obtained was 16,125 tons per hectare and, even though expectations were the average yield in 2016 was going to be 16,477, producers have only obtained 4,555.

In the first quarter of 2015, production amounted to 4,703 tons of guava harvested in 292 hectares.

Currently, Zacatecas has a total of 3,020 hectares dedicated to this perennial crop.

So far, the guava that has been harvested comes from the municipalities of Apozol and Jalpa.

Huanusco, Juchipila, Moyahua, Nochistlán, Tabasco and Villanueva, also cultivate this fruit; however, according to the official website of the SIAP, they still haven't started the harvest.
