US: Green onion supply steady and coming from Mexico

An ample supply of green onions is currently coming from abroad.

“For us there is a good flow of green onions coming from Mexico,” said Dave Franzella of Franzella Produce in San Francisco, California.

Green onions, often considered a staple item, are seeing a steady rate of demand and pricing is around $8.00 to $10.00 per 48-bunch box, according to Franzella.

“We have a consistent demand for green onions, I’d say every day of the year there is demand for them, especially for us, being in the Bay Area with the multicultural environment we live in,” explained Franzella.

Extra interest also comes from the restaurant world, said Franzella, specifically Asian and Mexican restaurants in addition to the consistent use of green onions in home cooking, as people try new recipes spurred by the likes of the Food Network and other food related media outlets.
