Upcoming Swiss garlic

Swiss garlic? That would have been impossible a few years ago. But now there is a demand for it and especially organic companies provide it.

Swiss garlic isn’t a widely know product. But it is an upcoming product. A look at the figures shows a cultivation area of 1.5 hectares in 2010. And that area has exploded; there was then an area of 26 hectares, 18 hectares of which are organic, in 2014.

Compared to the import of 3,800 metric tons the Swiss production, 40 metric tons, is still very small. This is mainly due to the cheap prices of the imported garlic and the amount of intensive work needed to produce garlic. But even so, the increasing production shows that consumers are prepared to pay more for Swiss grown produce.

The Association of Swiss Vegetable Producers has on its website an interactive seasonality table (www.gemuese.ch/saisonkalender). So consumers can directly see which Swiss vegetables are freshly available.
