US: Corn becoming more available and affordable

Corn prices are starting to come down while the availability of the vegetable is going up, according to Doug Schaefer of EJ’s Produce Sales Inc. in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Corn supplies are coming out of Mexico right now, and while prices have been high for a long time – $20.00 per 48-ct box – I am getting information that prices are starting to come down,” explained Schaefer. He anticipates corn prices may be cut by up to a third or in half in the coming weeks.

Demand for corn, a staple item, is usually stable and consistent, with store promotions being the one thing that can drive up popularity.

“Like anything else, if a store puts up a sign that says corn is four ears for a dollar, you will stand in line to get it,” said Schaefer.

Holidays such as Memorial Day and the Fourth of July drive up demand for corn, and last summer, a low California corn supply, mainly due to the drought, had corn prices reaching their highest levels in 20 years, according to Schaefer.

“Some California corn growers may be planting one-fifth of what they usually plant,” he said, adding that last summer saw corn go for as much as $30.00 to 40.00 per box.

“I don’t anticipate that this year,” Schaefer said, noting that Colorado has a huge supply network of the popular summertime vegetable.
