US(TX): Competition keeps Roma tomato prices low

Ample supplies of Roma tomatoes from Mexico coming into the United States have kept prices low in the states. With the Sinaloa season in full swing and plenty of importers bringing in supplies through McAllen, Texas, the market has been kept in check.

“Everyone has tomatoes,” said Claudia Carter with Ergo Produce. “There used to be only two or three shippers in the Rio Grande Valley, and now there are 30 or 40 – and they're all competing against one another.” As a result, she noted, prices have been kept to a minimum, around $8.30 per carton of Romas.

The market could be more unstable, explained Carter, were it not for the bad weather Florida's growers have had to deal with. That weather has delayed production, and that's made some of the buyers that usually go with tomatoes from Florida to look for Mexican product coming through McAllen, Texas or Nogales, Arizona.

“I'm not anticipating the market to go up this month,” said Carter. “Some people think the market might go up soon, but that's unlikely with so many shippers having tomatoes.”
