Mexico: Sonora to export pecans to China at lower tariff

The government of the People's Republic of China reduced the tariff on Mexican pecans, which gives Sonoran producers an advantage. The state of Sonora produces 15,000 tons of pecans worth more than 60 million dollars every year.

According to Julio Cesar Corona, the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture issued a statement announcing that it would reduce the tariff on Sonoran pecan by 14 points (from 24 to 10%). The measure will be in effect throughout 2016.

Sonora exports to China nearly 11,000 tons of the 15,000 tons of pecans it produces every year.

"It is an important moment for the producers of nut in Sonora," said the head of Sagarpa in the state.
Rafael Contreras Madrid, the press liaison of the agency, said Sonora had some 12,000 hectares in pecan orchards. The Rural Development District of Hermosillo has a planted area of 7,500 hectares, while Caborca has 1,500 hectares, and the District of Cajeme has 1,300 hectares.

The areas of Sahuaripa, Magdalena, Ures, and Mazatan also contribute to the production of pecans, which are harvested during the months of October and November.
