France: Weather pushes back citrus season

Saint Charles sells 18 varieties of citrus, most of which come from Spain and Morocco. This season, unusual weather in both of those regions has complicated the marketing of several citrus varieties in Europe.

“Middle season citrus varieties arrived very early when the early varieties sales were not even finished,” said Anne. “So that caused a bit of a problem.” In addition to overlapping availability of fruit, a lack of water in Morocco and the south part of Spain has worried growers in both regions. Growers in Valencia, for instance, are very concerned that it's the middle of winter and it hasn't rained for two months.

Despite the challenges, citrus shipments have been up about four percent this season for Saint Charles and its member companies. The total amount of citrus shipped since the beginning of the campaign in October reached 170,000 tons in January. Of that amount, organic fruit represented a small portion, but Anne expressed excitement about the organic segment because of its rapid growth, regardless of overall volume.
