Puerto Rican GoMango goes for US

After primarily exporting their mangoes to the local and European market, Puerto Rican based mango producer GoMango, now has its eye on the US market. Exports of green mango to the US are set to start at the beginning of this year's mango season, which typically runs from May to the end of July.

The company sends ripened mangoes to Europe, but has chosen to send only green mangoes to the US because of treatment requirements. In the US, you have to dip each mango, according to the size, at very hot temperatures for one hour. This is the only way to ensure that all insects are killed. All mangoes in the states are treated in this way, even the mangoes being sent from Florida to California need to undergo hot treatment first.

The hot treatment requirement is one of the reasons which led the company to make the decision to offer just the green mango to the US, Yoav Cohen, President of GoMango, said that he felt that the taste of the green mango isn't as affected by this method of treatment compared to the ripened mango.

Another factor is that the green mango is seen as a premium product which also achieves premium prices.

"Green mangoes are seen as a special market, although not very big, prices can go up to as much as $100 for a 50lb box which is a very good price.

New product, Fruit 'N Go Puree.

Along with exporting green mangoes to the US, the company is also bringing out a new snack product to the market this year. Cohen feels that Fruit 'N Go mango puree will fit nicely into growing demand for healthy on the go snacks and feels that it is a perfect fit for children. Children can eat the mango puree as they would eat apple sauce. The fruit is passed through hot water for sterilization which also creates a vacuum pack seal which gives the product a shelf life of one year.
