Peruvian canned artichoke exports down 28%

Canned artichokes have been one of the agricultural industry's main export product this century. However, last year they had a setback, as export volumes fell by 4.1%, from 34,852,825 kilos in 2014 to 33,413,141 kilos in 2015. Additionally, according to data released by Agrodata Peru, the price of canned artichokes decreased by 28%, from 196.3 million dollars in 2014 to 142.2 million dollars.

Canned artichokes are usually exported in glass containers containing brine, artichoke hearts or artichoke parts. The artichoke varieties that are generally canned are the Green Globe variety and, to a lesser extent, the Imperial Star and Creole varieties.

The main export destinations in 2015 were the United States with $57.9 million dollars, Spain with $14.7 million, and France with $6.3 million. These countries have been the main export destinations over the last decade.

According to Agrodata Peru's website, the main exporting companies are: Sociedad Agricola Viru with $29.4 million dollars, Danper Trujillo with $16.6 million, Camposol with $11.7 million, Danper Arequipa with 8.8 million, and Alsur Peru with $8.8 million dollars.

Camposol transferred all of its canning assets to Agricola Viru. Thus Camposol will no longer export canned artichokes and Agricola Viru will be able to increase exports this year.
