Phil Hogan, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, yesterday revealed that the European Commission (EC) did not intend to review the commercial agreement on Moroccan tomato imports.
Last week Spanish producers demanded the EC to carry out measures to limit Moroccan tomato imports on the European market. In their letter to the Commission, they estimated that Moroccan tomato imports were higher than the quota agreed upon. They believe that this will lead to a plummet in prices.
Phil Hogan has said that they do not plan to “revise the agreement with Morocco concerning tomatoes or other products”. He also added that the figures given by the Spanish and Italian producers on Moroccan volume in the European market are not the same as those recorded by the EC.
