Willi Andree – Vegetable wholesale trader

Carrots: “A very popular winter vegetable”

“This year the price of carrots is slightly higher than last year,” states the experienced wholesale trader Wilhelm Andree of the company Willi Andree. “There are two main reasons: Last summer was very hot and dry, that decreased the production. And currently there is a high demand for carrots. All this together influences the price.”

In addition to their own stand at the wholesale center in Düsseldorf the company Willi Andree has its own production area close to the large town on the river Rhine. During the summer and winter the company grows several German vegetables, like red cabbage, kale, turnip tops, celeriac, celery, as well as endives.

Dutch carrots
“We used to grow carrots, but not anymore,” states the wholesaler, “Overall there are fewer carrot producers in Germany. Now we get our carrots from Dutch suppliers.” The carrots sold by Willi Andree are grown under a layer of straw, harvested and shipped freshly to Germany.

Quality and demand
“The quality of the products is very good, we are very satisfied,” explains Wilhelm Andree, “And the demand is high and stable too. Carrots are, especially during colder weather, a popular winter vegetable.” The trader sells the carrots unpackaged. “We don’t have prepackaged goods. It doesn’t matter if you want 500 gram or 2 kilos; we just weigh our carrots and meet your requirements,” states Andree.

German customers love small carrots
“German customers are particularly fond of the smaller, finer carrots. And due to the hot summer the carrots are somewhat smaller than previous years. That means that this year the carrots are perfect for the German customers,” explains the trader.
