Mexico: Zacatecas increases its garlic production

According to Sagarpa's January's harvest progress report, 32,594.05 tons of garlic were harvested in January this year, i.e. 9 percent more than in the previous year.

Even though the surface devoted to this crop decreased, the entity produced an additional 294.52 tons of garlic this year because they achieved higher ton per hectare yields.

Zacatecas continues to lead garlic production nationwide and the rural average price per ton stands at 194,335.99 pesos.

According to estimates, Zacatecas would have had 2,268 hectares devoted to garlic crops by January this year, however, the state exceeded this forecast as they have 2,326 hectares with garlic crops, 4 of which were lost.

Calera is the municipality with the largest garlic production at the state level with an average of 6,399 tons recorded in the last month.

Villa de Cos ranks second with 6,250 tons; followed by Guadalupe with 5,372 tons, Fresnillo with 4,080, and Panuco with 3,107 tons.

The district with the highest production is Zacatecas, which is made up by General Enrique Estrada, Calera, Guadalupe, Morelos, Panuco, Trancoso, Vetagrande, Villa de Cos, and the capital. There are 23 garlic producing municipalities in the state.
