Bayer launches new Galia melon

At Fruit Logistica 2016 Bayer officially launched
its latest innovation in melon: Galkia. With this
novelty, Bayer pulls together the melon flavour
of yesterday and provides best quality through the
whole summer.

Bayer’s goal was a return to the time-honoured melon, with all its aroma and flavour. Galkia promises to fulfil the demands of today’s markets at every step of the value chain thanks to the product properties. With Galkia, Bayer can provide a melon that will be at its best quality point when consuming. As a result, Galkia leads to many repeat purchases, building consumer loyalty and trust which of course is good news for all retailers, traders and growers that deal with this melon.

“One of our strengths is to work closely with each part of the food chain and the supply chain to understand and anticipate their demands”, says Carin Stroeken, Produce Chain Manager of the Region Europe Middle East & Africa of the vegetable seeds business of Bayer. After searching and identifying yesterday’s flavour as a trend we decided to act.

The new melon has been created due to hard work and dedication of Bayer’s professionals. The goal was to supply consistently top quality melons throughout the whole summer season.

What’s the secret behind it? Very simple: its own skin has become its exclusive ripeness indicator changing its colour from green to yellow and revealing the best time for harvesting. This is a real innovation, which lets you identify the exact point at which Galkia displays all the characteristics that make it unique: aroma, flavour and firmness. To be harvested at the peak of its flavour will guarantee you buy a melon that tastes like a melon.

When and where? Galkia is already being grown successfully in different regions in Spain, such as Almeria, Murcia and La Mancha. This distinct production will allow supply season to span to the whole summer, from early June through to the end of September. Three Galkia varieties are already available for this summer: -Kirene, Kinder and Kinetic. Bayer is currently developing other projects in the Southern Hemisphere in order to bring new varieties that will enable them to grow them in other regions to increase the availability of Galkia.

“Enjoying Galkia at its optimum ripening point will be a fact this summer, as Galkia offers a sufficiently long shelf life to deliver perfectly ripe melons to every European destination,” says Francisco Solera, Crop Sales Manager.

Galkia at Fruit Logistica 2016

Galkia’s presence at Fruit Logistica 2016 meant its public premiere to the international sector. “We chose to let everybody know, both our clients and the international media, about Galkia at Fruit Logistica because we considered it the perfect scenario to launch such a relevant innovation,” says Solera.
