US(CA): Beet supplies at a bare minimum
Beets, the jewel-colored root vegetable, are in low supply out of California right now. Paula Amaya of A&B Produce in South San Francisco points out that beet season is in its natural lull, but that the El Niño weather pattern in California isn’t helping.
“The California Central Valley and Mexico are areas where beets normally come from this time of year, but, due to rains, the supply is very low,” she explained.
Beet prices are high right now, coming in at $13.00 to $14.00 per carton, but can get as low as $9.00 come summer.
Amaya has seen a steady increase in the interest in beets, as the foodie culture and eateries are using beets in their dishes.
“Most restaurants offer a beet salad these days. We mostly sell beets to restaurants and have one customer who is doing a fermented beet product, and they require a lot of inventory.”
Inventory that produce companies see improving in the spring.
