US: Endive market rebounds after early winter struggle

Winter weather caused problems for the endive market late last year, but the market is showing signs of rebounding. Cold and wet weather meant suppliers were low in quality and availability, challenging suppliers hoping to provide the niche lettuce variety.

“The elements can cause the product to yellow, burn, blister, and any one or more of those quality issues can negate the marketability of the product,” said Frank Ratto of Ratto Bros Fresh Produce.

But with harvest underway across Southern California, Yuma, Mexico, and others areas, the market is turning around as we move towards spring. Prices are currently around $10.50 per two-dozen pack, with the USDA quoting $30.00 per ten-pound carton. Although the USDA reports that supply is still light, Ratto has seen a turnaround.

“About two weeks ago, the market did see a peak in price, and, currently, the quality and supplies are excellent and stable,” he shared.

In coming weeks, as harvest comes in, watch for potential drops in prices as the market levels out ahead of the spring.
