While other commodities have seen supply issues, apples are having a steady off-season with no major fluctuations or shortages. Prices and supply are consistent with seasonal norms, and don’t show any signs of changing as we move into spring.“The supply is definitely steady,” Cara Auz of John’s Market NYC shared. “It’s not apple season, so you don't have a wide variety, but it’s definitely been steady. Nothing is local right now.”
With the off-season, the standard varieties are the only ones available, including Fuji and Red Delicious. More seasonal varieties, including Honeycrisp, won’t be available for several months. But even with the seasonal shift in availability, prices have stayed the same with no fluctuations.
In a season dominated by weather-related shortages, the reliability of apples stands out more than ever. Auz credits it in part to the commodity’s versatility and diversity.
“It’s not an item where you’re ever going to see noticeable things happening because you can always use a different kind,” she says. “If you don’t have a Granny Smith, you can use a Golden Delicious. If you don't have a Red Delicious, you can always use a Macintosh. There are so many varieties that we’re never really going to have shortages. There’s always a staple around as far as apples are concerned.”
