Low supply caused by weather
Germany: Pineapples: Traders hope for improvement
The pineapple trade continues to struggle. “Currently there are fewer pineapples available, due to issues with the weather in the countries of origin,” explains a German importer and wholesaler, “This causes higher prices at the target markets.”
The pineapples’ main country of origin is Costa Rica in Central America. The current weather has a negative impact on the production volume.
Hope for improvement
“The current weather in Costa Rica is disadvantageous for importers,” says the wholesaler, “That causes us problems. But we wait and hope that the situation will improve in a few weeks.” However, in the short term improvement is not expected.
The adverse weather conditions in the production areas have been going on for quite some time. “The situation almost became normal over the last few months,” states the expert, “We often have been struggling with these problems in 2015. At least the quality is mostly good.”
Lower exports compared to 2014
In the previous year Costa Rica exported fewer pineapples compared to 2014. In 2014 the Central American country exported for 289 million USD of pineapples.
