US: Mexican asparagus imports to pick up

Mexican asparagus growers in Caborca are taking advantage of improved weather in January to kick up supplies in February. Low temperatures made for a slow start to the Mexican season, but, barring any more inclement weather, volumes could peak next month.

“The majority of asparagus is coming from Mexico, though Peru still has some trickling in on the East Coast,” said Jeff Friedman of Carbamericas. Cold weather during the last part of 2015 moderated early Mexican supplies, though the situation wasn't as tight as that from the previous season. At this time last year, a freeze kept Mexican supplies very low, and prices for Peruvian asparagus, which was virtually the only asparagus available, were high.

“With Peru and Mexico in at the same time, the market is a little more stable,” said Friedman. “But, as Mexico moves into supplies, the market will go down in February.” On January 29, prices for an 11-pound carton of jumbo asparagus from Mexico were between $24.75 and $28.75 at crossings through California and Arizona. For Peruvian imports, prices for an 11-pound carton of large asparagus were between $16.00 and $18.00 at Florida ports of entry.

“If you have no weather issues out of Mexico, which means cool nights and warm days,” said Friedman, “then prices will be in the high-twenties or mid-thirties for 28-pound cartons.”

Carbamericas will be at this year's Southern Exposure that takes place between March 3 and 5 in Hollywood, Florida. You can find them on the show floor at booth #708.
