Tunesian pomegranates niche crop in China

A view growers in China cultivate Tunisian pomegranate varieties. “Currently there are not many growers in China that produce produce Tunisian pomegranates. Most of the fruit is sold at high-end markets and the number of competitors is limited. In 1986 first seeds were imported into China. The variety is characterised by its early ripeness, large size, fresh red colour and soft seeds. The first crop can be harvested from August onwards. The Tunisian government pushed its production in China in the 1990s and then it was given its Chinese name 'Tunisian soft seed pomegranate'. Average weight of our pomegranate crop is 55 grams per kernel',” explains Wu Zhi.

Sichuan Fruit is a pomegranate grower. The company is based in Liangshan, in the centre of Sichuan province. The company employs its own outdoor plantations and packing and storage facilities. “In 2015 we registered our own pomegranate brand under the name Chi Yan. Our plantation is based 1,800 above sea level. We have long hours of sunshine and large difference between day and night temperatures. This enable us to grow the Tunisian pomegranates. Our plantations covers 120 hectares (1,800 mu). We sell our crop to large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.”

“There are only a few growers in China that produce Tunisian pomegranates. Our competitive advantage is our unique location and history of pomegranate growing. Because production is for high-end markets, quality is important. As such our competitive position is protected, as one needs experience to grow a quality pomegranate crop”.
