The first 'Limburg Gold' was harvested at Teboza today. This gives the starting sign for the asparagus season with the first greenhouse asparagus. "The start is earlier than we expected ourselves. According to our original planning, we would start harvesting in the week of Carnaval. The cause is that we haven't had a real winter. Those few days of frost didn't reach the greenhouses and we only put the heating on two weeks ago," says Will Teeuwen.
The quality of the asparagus is excellent, according to Will. "And the demand seems to be good, as the prices for the imported asparagus are high. We expect the lovers to start with Dutch asparagus, which have a different flavour, soon," continues Will. "The volume of Dutch asparagus is still limited at the moment, but other greenhouses will also start soon and the numbers will go up every day."
According to the grower the asparagus area in the Netherlands has gone up slightly. "But the market can easily take this. The Netherlands is our main market and it is still growing, but the demand for Dutch asparagus is only rising in other European countries such as France and Germany. We expect the first white and green asparagus from our own cultivation in Spain in two weeks, and we're offering our customers a nice alternative for overseas with this."
