Mold on fruit and vegetables

Producers deny all allegations

This week the North German Broadcaster (NDR) reported that rotten fruit and vegetables can be found in many supermarkets and discount grocery stores. FreshPlaza reported this news too. The NDR program ‘Market’ showed that, in random samples, rotten fruit was found in 15 of the 17 tested Aldi, Edeka, Lidl and Rewe stores. And on the NDR website the companies promised that they would improve the situation.

Supermarkets promise to do better
The discount grocery store Aldi states that it regrets the outcome: “ These variations in quality should have been discovered by store personnel or management during the course of the day. This will improve in the future.” Also Edeka expresses its regrets: “Edeka cannot explain these findings it doesn’t meet our standards. The research of the program will be used as an opportunity to increase the daily quality control in the fruit and vegetable departments." The other supermarkets also made statements in which they promised to do better.

Producers state they are not to blame
Now producers of the rotten fruit and vegetables react as well and they state that they are not to blame. The quality problems have nothing to do with the products provided. They claim that the problems are caused by the handling and storage of the products by the stores.

Correction of an image
During the coverage of this news FreshPlaza published an image of moldy citrus fruit in a net bag. We clearly want to express that the image used in the article if from an external source. The showed image was a symbol and doesn’t refer to a specific producer or retailer of the product. We expressly want to emphasize that. And we apologize if readers were led to draw the wrong conclusions from the way we covered this news. And we are always prepared to report about these discoveries from the producers’ point of view.
