Mexico: Quintana Roo strengthens control against the HLB

Israel Martinez Andrade, agricultural deputy for SAGARPA in Quintana Roo, said that, given the risks of citrus crop loss to the HLB disease reported by the producers of Jose Maria Morelos, the state delegation of SAGARPA implemented actions through the Committees of Plant Health for the Peninsula of Yucatan to control this menace.

Martinez Andrade visited Quintana Roo to meet with producers and authorities to publicize the call for the various programs of SAGARPA in 2016.

In this regard, shortly before his meeting with the producers of the Maya area, Martinez Andrade stated that the huaglongbing disease threatened citrus producers every year and that this situation also represented a risk to neighboring states.

Therefore, he said, the Plant Health Committees had launched a regional campaign, which included the states of Campeche and Yucatan, to carry out pest control.

"This is a preventive measure that the Plant Health Committees of the Yucatan Peninsula are conducting. In addition, we also carry out local plant health boards to control the damage that the insect that transmits the disease affecting citrus production causes," he said.

He said that one of the main actions being carried out was the application of insecticides and/or the implementation of pruning or biological control against the insects.

He also stressed that, in face of the damage caused by the yellow dragon disease, the states that make up the peninsula and that are the most affected by this disease had strengthened actions. The pest hasn't been completely eliminated, but it has been controlled.
