Singaporean buyers travel down for best prices before the Chinese New Year

Mandarins in demand in Vietnam

The drop in the value of the ringgit has led to an increase in the demand for Mandarin oranges in Johor as Singaporeans and those working across the border are snapping up boxes of the Chinese New Year favourite here.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism council chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said they expect to see a 10% increase in the demand this year as the festive celebration draws nearer.

He said many Malaysians working in the island republic and Singaporeans prefer to purchase boxes of the Mandarin oranges in Johor due to the high exchange rate.

“It is much cheaper for them to do their Chinese New Year shopping here, Mandarin oranges included, compared to the prices offered in Singapore,” he said after visiting a Mandarin orange supplier in Taman Perindustrian Ringan Pulai here on Tuesday.

He said more than 200 containers of the fruit have been imported into the state from China, which is some one million boxes of Mandarin oranges, to cater to the demand.
