Alessandro Fornari (Kiwigold)

Italy: We've invested in new kiwi varieties

"There was a moment during the bacteriosis crisis when even researchers and technicians were unsure about the future of kiwis in Italy. In the meantime, we kept investing in varietal innovation and luckily producers are now very interested in the cultivars for which we have acquired the rights. We had thought about planting 35 hectares of new varieties but now we are going for 50," explains Alessandro Fornari (in the photo), director of Consorzio Kiwigold. The company has for example invested in the Jintao cultivar and, since then, the Jingold brand has become synonym with high-quality golden kiwis (which has this year reached the record quantities of 8 thousand tons in Italy and 4 thousand tons in Chile).

Today, due to the cooperation with the same Chinese Botanical Institute in Wuhan (WIB) that created Jintao, the Consortium has acquired the rights to three new varieties:
  1. "Jinyan", golden kiwi studied for the overseas markets.
  2. "Z5Z6", green variety with a high dry matter content and brix level.
  3. "Oriental Red" (Dong Hong), the first red kiwi cultivar obtained with a breeding programme.
Concerning the latter, Fornari adds that "the WIB Institute had already initiated a breeding programme in 2008 as, back then, the only red variety had smaller grades and a short shelf-life and on the European market fruit under 65 grams cannot be sold and shelf-life is important."

Oriental Red

In 2013/14, after visiting test orchards in China, Consorzio Kiwigold started producing its vegetable material and, in 2015, it officially presented its new range.

"We were delighted by the great response from growers. Even those who had not planted in 2010-2012 due to the bacteriosis are interested in the new varieties. There is still a long way to go for what concerns crop behaviour, agronomic techniques, commercial tests, packaging and consumer feedback."

The future brand for the new kiwi varieties will remain connected to Jingold, which is already popular both on the domestic and international markets.

"We will attend Fruit Logistica 2016 (Hall 2.2, Stand A-02) in partnership with Naturitalia. There we will work with our clients on supplying programmes of Chilean kiwis."
