Poland needs to base apple production more on demand

Poland needs to pay more attention to the level of demand when growing apples. Within a few years the apple production grew to 4.3-4.5 million tons, and in the long term this may grow to 5 million tons. More than half of the annual apple production is meant for processing at lower prices. Eberhard Makosz, the Polish fruit export, posed the following question on the news website sagyogrody.pl: is it not worth it to limit apple production to 3.5 million tons, and then produce higher quality apples instead, that can be sold for higher prices?

According to Makosz, the Polish apple sector's expectations of export possibilities for apples going to new markets and distant countries, are too high. The export to new destinations is already rising to 100,000 tons in the coming years. That is not even 10% of the total Polish apple export. After the Russian boycott, Polish apple export fell from 1 million tons to 860,000 tons, of which 560,000 tons went to Eastern European countries and 280,000 tons went to Western Europe. Approximately, 20,000 tons were sent outside Europe. Polish apple consumption fluctuates around 650,000 tons.
