Late start for Mexican cucumbers

Juan Pablo Gutiérrez and his brother Eduardo manage the family business Serg Agrícola, in Mexico. The company produces two cucumber varieties: American cucumbers and Pickle cucumbers, and exports mainly to the United States and Canada.

Juan Pablo Gutiérrez explains that the season is in its early months and that it started with a couple of week's delay because of the cold weather conditions. "In our case, we started with the Pickle in the last week of November. The American cucumber season has also been delayed, since it started in the second week of January. They will both come to an end around the first week of May."

The company's production volumes so far have amounted to about 600,000 bushels of American cucumbers and another 400,000 bushels of Pickle cucumbers. Current prices stand at $ 20.95 for the American and $ 22.95 for Pickle cucumbers. Gutiérrez said that prices vary depending on the market, although 70% of the production is sold under contract.
