Growers at Kompany have started harvesting their first greenhouse grown cucumbers. Just like last year the company has 24 acres of cucumbers growing in greenhouses. The cooperative has four members who grow cucumbers in a greenhouse, and these cucumbers are all coming into production this week and next week. "We hope that we can enter the programs with a unique, Dutch product," reports Kompany.
"Recently, the cucumber market has been overwhelmed by Spanish cucumbers, where 20% more cucumbers have been harvested due to the warmer weather. Because of this the cucumbers are being culled. Currently, the Dutch cucumbers are going for around 30 cents a piece. The big question is what kind of weather Spain will have, because their weather could majorly effect the supply. If, for example, the weather turns colder in Spain, there is no telling what will happen with production."
