No surprises expected for Polish cabbage season

It is still early days as cabbage producers in Poland are preparing for the 2016 season. With temperatures this last week firmly below freezing levels, it is still too early to tell, however growers are optimistic about the coming season.

Polish vegetable producer and distributor Cool Fruit offers two cabbage varieties and Andrzej Mierzejewski said that he expects production this season to be in line with last year, with 1050 tons of Chinese cabbage and white cabbage at 100,000 pcs. With all of the talk of weather disruptions, Andrzej only expects the supply to vary by +/- 5 to 10% at the most. He said that more will become apparent in 2 weeks time.

Aside from the upcoming cabbage season, Cool Fruit also offers covered vegetables such as peppers, aubergine and zucchini, which are offered from May to December. The company has its own crop, but they also distribute for other producers in their cooperative.

The company has its own pack house where goods are prepared and placed on pallets on site. Special machinery is also available which enables them to customise packaging size for their customers for anything from 100g or 500g, it is all up to the client.

Most production is for the domestic market and is sent to Hyper supermarkets, however, goods were also distributed to Holland and the UK market last year, so export has also become something they do.

Andrzej said that they see clear differences between what the Dutch and UK markets need compared to the Polish domestic market. In general, most of the green peppers are distributed to Holland and the UK. The Polish and Eastern European market will accept more colouration that just pure green.

Another change that will occur in the next couple of weeks, and just in time for Fruit Logistica in Berlin, is that the company website is expected to get a whole new look with a new layout, pictures and text.
