Citrus fruit: Winter weather takes off pressure

The citrus sales have relaxed. “The demand for citrus fruit has improved due to the cold weather,” explains a German wholesale trader, “During the period of warm weather the customers’ consumption of citrus fruit was low. And the low sales put some pressure on the trade.”

Usually the consumption of citrus fruit is quite high in December. “In January the situation for traders has improved, due to the drop in temperatures,” says the expert.

80 percent from Spain
“Overall the citrus fruit is of a good quality,” states the trader in fruit, “There is barely competition about the supply countries, the largest part comes from Spain.” About 80% of the citrus fruit traded in Germany originates from Spain.

This season the estimated citrus harvest of the Mediterranean countries is around 20 million metric tons, an increase compared to 2014.
