Colombia: Marialabaja pineapple reaches Europe

The pineapple cultivated at the foot of the Montes de Maria mountains, in Marialabaja, will venture into the European markets. The first 20 tons of pineapple fruit will be packed in a refrigerated container at the rural area of Marialabaja, at the north of the reservoir of San José de Playon, where the Inversiones Tapia Villamizar SAS company has 60 hectares devoted to this crop, 30 of which are already in production. The container will be moved to the Port Society on Wednesday morning, where he it will be boarded onto a ship bound for Rotterdam (Netherlands) on Friday.

The customer asked for the caliber 6 Golden Honey Gold pineapple variety (which weights 2.2 kilos) and the 8-caliber variety (which weights 1.6 kilos).

Inversiones Tapia Villamizar is chaired by Alfredo Tapia Ruiz, and it could expand its planting area in Marialabaja if it can consolidate exports to Europe. The company is in conversations with the Netherlands and buyers from Spain, Germany, and Switzerland. To achieve these exports, Inversiones Tapia had the support of the ICA, the Chamber of Commerce of Barranquilla, the DIAN, Narcotics, and the Sociedad Portuaria, said Jaime Gamarra, a spokesman for the pineapple growing firm.
