Cameroon: CDC to invest in banana producing unit

The Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC) plans to invest just over 519.2 million FCFA in it’s banana producing unit. The investment will allow them to buy three tractors and to strengthen their energy park. This investment programme follows on from two big projects launched in 2015 when 244.6 million FCFA was made available.

In 2015, the CDC also aimed to improve conditions for their workers in their camps in the South West region. About 179 million FCFA has already been made available to begin construction (as of January 2016) of 210 bedrooms.

The CDC’s position in the banana market is not fortuitous. The state-owned company does not want to be pushed aside by the company Plantations du Haut Penja (PHP) who announced their intention to increase banana production in 2015 to 170,000 tons compared to 157,000 tons in 2014. An increase in production from the two major banana producing agro-industries in Cameroon is expected to bring national banana production to over 300,000 tons.
