Senegal: Banana sector generates 6.5 billion FCFA

According to Dogo Seck, Secretary General for the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Equipment, the banana sector is good in Senegal, with over 9,000 producers earning 6.5 billion FCFA (400 professionals estimated in this agricultural sector).

Despite good figures in the sector, Senegal is still importing bananas. In 2013, imports reached 17,066 tons and 15,567 tons in 2014. Dogo Seck believes that with help from the Enhanced Integrated Framework, Senegal should be able to develop it’s potential and better place products of Senegalese origin on the national, sub-regional and international markets.

The number of people in the distribution chain is estimated at 4,000 and is mainly women and young people. They work in commerce and transporting the fruit from production regions to urban and rural markets.
