Argentina to negotiate entry of lemon to US

Ethanol, lemon and public works. These are the issues that governor, Juan Manzur, discussed with the Minister of Interior, Rogelio Frigerio, and other national authorities on Wednesday afternoon. "The new government seems to have a very good disposition," said the governor after the meeting.

He also stated they had discussed the possibility of the entry of lemon to the United States. He said Frigerio had contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs so that they give him a diagnosis of the situation. In this regard, Frigerio and Manzur agreed to seek new measures to increase lemon exports and, especially, to reopen the US market. According to the governor, the Ministry of Interior invited him to participate in a mission to the US, to directly manage the reopening of the market for Argentine citrus. The trip's agenda would be defined in two weeks. "The possibility of re-entering the US market is something that the producers from Tucuman have been waiting for, for years and the national government has the political will to advance the talks," said the head of the executive branch.

"Another issue we discussed was the infrastructure for the Benjamin Matienzo airport so that we can export cranberry, for example, because there will be some large aircrafts arriving and we need to improve the infrastructure to be able to do this," he said. He said they were 100 ton planes and that they only loaded 70 tons. "They gave me an affirmative answer, we're going to do this," he said.

According to the head of the executive, this would allow the region to export more fruit. "This would stimulate the planting of more hectares, generating more work," he said. For this, Manzur scheduled a meeting next week with Gustavo Lopetegui, a close associate of the Chief of Staff, Marcos Peña, who was recently appointed Secretary of Public Policy Coordination of the Nation.
