Erik-Jan Thur, Marni Fruit:

"Citrus trade finally gets going"

It has been quiet on the citrus market for a long time, but now the demand is bursting loose. "Citrus wasn't easy to sell. Due to the high temperatures in Europe the citrus consumption was at a considerably lower level," says Erik-Jan Thur of Marni Fruit. "Buyers abroad were also quiet and this caused the necessary price pressure."

Marni Fruit is traditionally a strong player in the area of leaf mandarins from house supplier Pardo. "At the moment we are carrying Clementines with leaf. They are sometimes more loose in their peel. We will soon switch to Clemenvilla and Clemen Late, they are firmer in the peel. The quality of the citrus is good throughout the line," says Erik-Jan. "There is hardly any competition from citrus from other origins. We are expecting enough supply from Spain over the next few weeks, but not too much."

"We are now switching from Navelina oranges to Navels. We are coming from Navelina prices at 7.50 - 8 Euro and the prices of the Navels are already around 9.50-10.50 Euro. All in all the prospects look good. We hope it gets a bit colder. This always results in a higher demand for citrus," concludes the importer.
