Newcastle City Farmers Market organiser Kevin Eade says the produce is looking good for the season and that the growers he works with have become used to dealing with weather changes in the region.
“It hasn’t really affected our growers, they’re all happy as Larry and it’s all looking pretty good at the moment,” he says.
The Hunter Valley region of NSW faced severe storm cells in December, with hail, heavy rainfall and strong winds, which also hit the nearby Sydney region.
The wet weather has continued into the New Year, with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology issuing a heavy rainfall and flash flood warning for parts of the Mid North Coast and Hunter districts. The Bureau has said overnight rainfall could be between 50-100 millimetres in some areas, with up to 200 millimetres also possible.
But Mr Eade points out that the region actually had a lot of dry weather prior to the change in December.
“It has been dry until recently,” he says, adding that the weather hasn’t been consistent for a long time.
“El Niño has come and created havoc, but there’s not much you can do about it,” he says.
“But Hunter Valley is going quite good at the moment.”
Mr Eade has been running the Farmers Market since 1999 and currently represents about 250 growers in the region. The Newcastle City Farmers Market is held on most Sundays, with the next one set for 10th January 2016.
