Costa Rica: Good quality soil essential for better bananas

"If we want to have a good quality production to export bananas, we need to continue having good conditions. We do this by carrying out diagnoses and good practices. Thus, we avoid impacting the soil and we'll succeed in maintaining the good soil conditions throughout time," said Rafael Segura, coordinator of Soil and Drainage from Corbana's Research Center.

According to Segura, they have witnessed several cases several decreases in banana production and the quality of the fruit when the soil conditions change.

Quality and production also decrease when the soils are worn. In these cases, Segura said, producers should discover what problems the soils have so they can apply practices that change the landscape.

"The most common thing that happens is a decrease in the soil's pH: an acidification and loss of fertility. However, the application of liming and organic fertilizer material increases the soil's health," he added.

To achieve having the best bananas, it's essential to keep the soil's in good condition and highly fertile.
