According to the Agricultural and Fishing Information Service (SIAP) of the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing and Food (SAGARPA), mango production in Chiapas during the 2014 agricultural year amounted to approximately 847,549,000 pesos.
Thus, mango production in 2014 was 59.8 percent higher than that in 2013 when it amounted to 504.8 million pesos.
The data from the SIAP shows that in the last crop year, production amounted to 196,000 tons of mango, mainly focused in five municipalities: Comitan, Tapachula, Tonala, Tuxtla Gutierrez and Villaflores.
The area harvested in these municipalities to reach the estimated value of production, as reported by the Agricultural Information Service, was 27,000 hectares.
According to the SIAP, Tapachula and Tonala are the biggest producers of mango in Chiapas. In 2014, Tapachula's produced an estimated 164,000 tons of mango while Tonala produced an estimated 20,000 tons of the fruit.
Chiapas re-positioned itself as the largest producer of mango in southeastern Mexico as it produced over 847 million pesos in mangoes in 2014. According to the SIAP, Veracruz was the second state with the highest production value with 310.4 million pesos, followed by Campeche with 61 million pesos, Oaxaca with 351.5 million, Yucatan with 5.8 million pesos, Tabasco with 4.5 million, and Puebla with 2.3 million pesos.
