The Egyptian strawberry season has started. The Tulpin Group flew the first load to Belgium this week, and Alain Tulpin says that the volumes are still very limited, "Most of the large exporters start on Thursday or Friday with the supply of Egyptian strawberries. This is around one week later than last year." Last year approximately 8,000 tons of Egyptian strawberries were exported to Europe.
High temperatures and rain
Alain says that this is mainly because temperatures during the planting period in September were too high, "Temperatures reached 39°C, which is very high in September in Egypt. In addition, there was a delay because of a great deal of rain in Alexandria, with many cloudy days in and around Cairo."
Alain expects large volumes after December 10th, "Overall, more was planted in Egypt. Predictions vary widely, but in general it can be said that 15% more was planted." Alain says that they should not overestimate the expanded area, "Egypt supplies large volumes of strawberries to the Golf states as well, where more and more strawberries are being consumed each year." But Egypt does have an advantage right now, the decreasing acreage in Huelva, Spain and Morocco, "The Egyptians hope they can lengthen the season and still be able to supply the market in February," says Alain.
