Increase blueberry acreage China

“We are a blueberry plantation in Heyuan in Henan province. Currently we cultivate 130,000 blueberry bushes, says Mr. Huang of Heyuan Maoqing Blueberry Plantation. “We sell our crop to wholesalers. Since 2013 we run a programme that the public can visit our farm and pick blueberries from our fields. In addition, small quantities are sold to customers directly.”

“We had a big harvest this season, but sales prices were low. June is the start of the blueberry season and that is usually when we get the best prices for our crop. This year in June, prices hoovered around 45 Yuan per 0,5 kg (€6,60), which is 35% lower than June last year. Prices decreased in the months after and in July we only received 35 Yuan for 0,5 kg (€5,20)”.

“I believe that the price of blueberries will further decrease. Blueberry acreage has increased in China in the last years. Blueberry production does not demand high technical plant or growing requirements and costs are relatively low. As a result, production has increased in Shangxi, Hubei and Zhejiang. As a result, oversupply on the market is pushing prices down.”

Miss Yangli Xing of Henan Heluo Agriculture shares Huang's opinion: “our domestic market has been influenced by the situation on the global market. We are not involved in export. However, I have noticed that blueberry export has gone down this year due the strong Yuan and slow international markets. As a result, more blueberries were sold on local markets.”

Both are positive about the coming season. Miss Xing: “the government is trying to devaluate the Yuan. This should propel exports. In addition, profit margins generally are high, even at the current market rate. So overall, I am not too worried about the coming season.”
