French group to produce organic bananas in Ivory Coast

The French group, Compagnie Fruitière, is being given €10.6 million from the EU to finance an organic banana production project on the Ivory Coast. The project aims to create 200 hectares of plantation villages in every zone in the North and South of the country. With heavy competition from Latin America, the aim is to develop a network of organic banana production that will be valued on the European market.

The Ivory Coast is Africa’s leading banana producer, with almost 326,00 tons of production. Through their subsidiary, SCB (Société de Culture Bananière), the Compagnie Fruitière farms over 5,200 hectares with production reaching an estimated 210,000 tons.
