According to the latest crop progress registered by the Department of Agricultural foods and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), onion production in the state increased by 18.06 percent over the same period last year.
In October 2014, onion production amounted to 40,152 tons; however, it amounted to 47,405 tons in October 2015, during the autumn-winter cycle this year.
Based on this volume, the State of Zacatecas is currently the fifth largest national producer of onions in this cycle.
In October 2015, Tamaulipas’ production stood at 133,198 tons, followed by Chihuahua, with 104,677 tons; Guanajuato, with 55,105 tons; Puebla, with 50,492; Sinaloa, with 49,006, and Zacatecas with 47,029 tons.
Zacatecas ranked second place with 117,544 tons in the spring-summer cycle of this year, only below Chihuahua, which had a production of 183,522 tons.
According to the annual harvests average, Zacatecas has remained the second largest onion producing entity since 2013.
