Organic ginger: current weather has negative effect on sales

Currently the German market for organic ginger is suffering from a quiet period. A German importer explains: "We can not complain, but we make one exception. The demand for ginger is not very high at the moment, due to the weather conditions." Cooler weather is better for the sales.

“We just started again with the import of organic ginger from Peru and China,” says the importer. Thus far we have sold around 80 metric tons and we are very satisfied." The buyers of organic ginger are almost exclusively normal food retailers.

Sales
“At the moment we have special offers and programs to promote the sales,” tells the expert. “Without the program the traders sell their products at a loss. For instance organic ginger from China costs 25 Euro per box. The boxes are sold for just 21 Euro to the supermarkets.” The prices differ from supermarket to supermarket. But the bottom line is that the importers are losing money.

Supply and quality
According to the importer the supply in terms of quantity is excellent. “And the quality is good too. The ginger from Peru is the best available, we have always been satisfied. The supply from China has strongly improved as well. It cannot be compared with the Chinese ginger from last year.”

Demand
Over the next few weeks the importer expects an increased demand. “We expect that if the temperature drops in the coming weeks the sales will pick up too. It is almost a given that when the colds rise the sales of ginger increases too. Many people choose a healthy ginger tea in the evening."
