Italy: The PDO Ribera orange season has started

The harvesting of PDO Ribera oranges of the Navelina variety has started in south Sicily, so the fruit will be available on the market over the next few days.

Quality seems to be excellent both from an organoleptic and external appearance point of view. Grades are medium-big and quantities are 10% more than the previous campaign (140,000 tons).

The season starts with the Navelina variety, which will be available until the end of December and will then continue with Washington Navel, available from mid-December.

"The total supply is made up mostly of Washington Navel, so the season will peak from mid-December. Anyway the first volumes of Naveline will be available on week 47," explains Paolo Parlapiano from Parlapiano Fruit.

The season should then continue until March, "though a lot will depend on the weather, we may even reach early/mid April."

The Consortium supporting the PDO oranges will also introduce initiatives to promote the fruit and guarantee the origins and quality of the product to consumers.

"Our mission is to support our 2,000 small producers on the domestic and European markets," adds Giuseppe Pasciuta, president of the Consortium.

"Although we mostly work on the domestic market, we are trying to increase exports especially to closer countries like Northern Europe, as our produce is not subject to post-harvesting treatments to extend its shelf-life," concludes Paolo Parlapiano.
