Volumes are not excessive for two reasons: "first of all, summer drought in Sardinia and Apulia led to a lower production. Then producers managed to programme the season better, so the market will not be flooded with produce driving prices down."
Most of the fresh artichokes on the market is of the Tema variety and comes from Sardinia. "Prices are around 40 cents per kg, whereas last year they hovered between 15 and 22 cents per kg". The Terom variety can also be found on some markets, which is much more expensive, but we are talking about very little produce because it is usually available from March onwards."

Purple artichokes from Apulia arrived a week ago, though they are becoming a niche product representing only 10/20% of total sales. "Prices are higher, 50 cents per kg or even something more, but it is not a positive thing because it makes it very difficult to sell."
"There is also some produce from Spain, which is only destined to the processing industry. Prices hover between 36 and 46 cents per kg."
