Italy: Traditional persimmons not doing well

One thing is certain - the 2015 persimmon season will not be remembered as one of the best ones. Quite the opposite, actually. "Considering prices and production costs, the situation has been negative since mid-October," explains Valentino Di Pisa, wholesaler from Bologna and president of Fedagromercati.

In Bologna, prices of local persimmons hover between 40 and 70 cents, "which is not particularly impressive, especially since consumers tend to prefer firmer options like Rojo Brillante. These are produced mainly abroad, though a few Italian producers have started investing."

At the moment, the price for these varieties hover between 80 cents and €1, with peaks of €1.20. "They are expected to increase, though, as volumes should decrease over the next few weeks."
